Circumcision

NEONATAL CIRCUMCISION (NEWBORNS)
What is Circumcision

Circumcision is the surgical removal of foreskin. Circumcision is the personal choice of parent/s and for many new parent's it is a hard decision to make. We recommend discussing your thoughts on circumcision with your family and doctor to decide if you would like your son circumcised.

About the procedure
Dr Ashraf performs neonatal circumcision on newborn babies from one (1) week up to four (4) weeks of age. The circumcision is performed in the procedure room of our private specialist suites located at the Mater Hospital in Mackay.
The circumcision is performed using a circular trimmer also known as a "Winklemann" circumcision clamp. The procedure usually takes 15 - 20 minutes, but we recommend allowing to an hour for consultation time and post circumcision instruction time.

A referral from your general practitioner is required for the procedure to be performed.

Booking an Appointment

We recommend contacting our rooms to book an appointment as soon as your son/s is born to ensure that your son is less than four weeks of age. Unfortunately babies over four weeks of age are unable to have the performed until they are 2 years and deemed able to be done under general anaesthetic.

Appointments can be made:
In person at Mackay Surgical Group at Suite 25 Mater Medical Suites, Mater Hospital. You can also book in by phoning 49429 588 between 9 am -
 pm Monday - Friday.
A list of intructions and a confirmation letter with the appointment details are then posted or emailed to you. We also include a patient registraction form that needs to be completed with your son's details.

On the day of the procedure
We ask that you arrive 15 minutes prior to the procedure with your paperwork completed and a current referral. The practice nurse will see you first to discuss instructions and post procedure management and answer any questions that you may have regarding the circumcision.

You will then be consulted by Dr Ashraf and be consented for the procedure to be performed. We ask that you wait down the end of the hall whilst the circumcision is being performed.

Once the circumcision is completed the nurse will then bring your son to you. The nurse will check your son after the procedure. An appointment is made for a post circumcision check 2 weeks after the circumcision. If you have any concerns or questions you can contact our rooms and organise a time with our nurse or doctor for consultation or speak to our nurse regarding any questions you may have.
The risks will be discussed during your consultation and are listed on the consent form.
